Imprint of transition metal d orbitals on a graphene Dirac cone

چکیده
We investigate the influence of SiO2, Au, Ag, Cu, and Pt substrates on the Raman spectrum of graphene. Experiments reveal particularly strong modifications to the Raman signal of graphene on platinum, compared to that of suspended graphene. The modifications strongly depend on the relative orientation of the graphene and platinum lattices. These observations are theoretically investigated and shown to originate basically from hybridization of electronic states in graphene and d orbitals in platinum. It is expected that, quite generally, hybridization between graphene and any material with d orbitals near the Fermi level will result in an imprint on the graphene Dirac cone, which depends sensitively on the relative orientation of the respective lattices.

Quantum-confinement and Structural Anisotropy result in Electrically-Tunable Dirac Cone in Few-layer Black Phosphorous
Two-dimensional (2D) materials are well-known to exhibit interesting phenomena due to quantum confinement. Here, we show that quantum confinement, together with structural anisotropy, result in an electric-field-tunable Dirac cone in 2D black phosphorus. Using density functional theory calculations, we find that an electric field, E ext, applied normal to a 2D black phosphorus thin film, can re...
متن کاملMetal to insulator transition in epitaxial graphene induced by molecular doping.
The capability to control the type and amount of charge carriers in a material and, in the extreme case, the transition from metal to insulator, is one of the key challenges of modern electronics. By employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy we find that a reversible metal to insulator transition and a fine-tuning of the charge carriers from electrons to holes can be achieved in epita...
متن کاملTopological insulator behavior of WS2 monolayer with square-octagon ring structure
We report electronic behavior of an allotrope of monolayer WS2 with a square octagon ring structure, refereed to as (so-WS2) within state-of-the-art density functional theory (DFT) calculations. TheWS2 monolayer shows semi-metallic characteristics with Dirac-cone like features around Г. Unlike p-orbital’s Dirac-cone in graphene, the Dirac-cone in the so-WS2 monolayer originates from the d-elect...
متن کاملProximity effects induced in graphene by magnetic insulators: first-principles calculations on spin filtering and exchange-splitting gaps.
We report on first-principles calculations of spin-dependent properties in graphene induced by its interaction with a nearby magnetic insulator (europium oxide, EuO). The magnetic proximity effect results in spin polarization of graphene π orbitals by up to 24%, together with a large exchange-splitting band gap of about 36 meV. The position of the Dirac cone is further shown to depend strongly ...
متن کاملHighly anisotropic Dirac cones in epitaxial graphene modulated by an island superlattice.
We present a new method to engineer the charge carrier mobility and its directional asymmetry in epitaxial graphene by using metal cluster superlattices self-assembled onto the moiré pattern formed by graphene on Ir(111). Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy reveals threefold symmetry in the band structure associated with strong renormalization of the electron group velocity close to the D...
